This is a regular expression (regex) pattern that matches a time string in the format of hh:mm:ss am/pm. Here’s a breakdown of the pattern:

Bing also has great variety, but it also makes the mistake of including 24 hour time, as “23:59” does not match this regex.

I think it’s important to keep this type of thing in mind when discussing how language models are going to take programmer’s jobs, as they have no real understanding of truth or logic.

In this example, ChatGPT and Bard both do a good job of dumping tonnes of data into a table.

The data is terse and accurate, and the aspects chosen to compare are relevant to the user.

Bing is the only chatbot that cites its sources in this example, though it also chooses the fewest number of topics, and does not include important factors such as price.

I was surprised to see how similar ChatGPT and Bard were, while Bing’s table seemed underwhelming.

The integration with image generation makes Bing chat feel a step above the other chatbots. However, its understanding of ASCII art is clearly imperfect as it gets the general spacing and aesthetic, but not any specific characters.

But after seeing Bard’s mangled monsters, the response with the carrot emoji almost feels like showing off.

Interestingly enough, this does not trigger any image generation, but it does a good job of understanding and manipulating the ASCII art.

I’m not sure if they do look happy, but maybe their happy faces would be clearer with a larger design?

This example illustrates the difference between the context available to the language generation model compared to the image generation model. The language response clearly understands the need for two bunnies, as requested in the previous request, but the image generation prompt loses that context.

Either way, I think that both including image generation and having a strong undertsanding of manipulating ASCII art makes Bing the clear winner in all things related to fluffy bunnies.

Conclusion

Well, it’s 3:00am as I write this, so I guess that’s my experiment over.

In conclusion, I was never particularly impressed with Bard. It mostly works, but it is missing a lot of the integrations of Bing, and doesn’t seem to provide the creative results of ChatGPT. Bing’s integration with search, image generation, and citing sources make it feel like the best go-to chatbot overall. I think ChatGPT can also be a good tool when Bing’s content policy gets in the way, or when more long-form content is required.

There’s a ton I didn’t get to, including more practical searches and code generation, so there’s still plenty more I want to do.
